CHINA:

Old and New

... is the theme of the Republic of China pavilion, completely reorganized with many new exhibits. Selected art treasures, representing China's 3,000-year history and culture, theme of the 1964 season, have been moved to the third floor. In sharp contrast, the spacious main hall now features a panoramic display of the economic achievement of free China in the last decade, in which exports and industrial output tripled, and agricultural production rose by 50 percent.

The pavilion itself has been described as one of the most beautiful in the Fair grounds. Every piece of roof tile was handmade, and every ceiling panel hand painted in Taiwan, repository and defender of Chinese tradition and culture. The ceremonial arch in front, and the intricately carved wood screen inside the main hall, entitled "100 birds pay tribute to queen phoenix", bid a warm welcome to World's Fair visitors from near and far.

Exhibits
Main Hall: Larger than life beauties, in a photo-mural from the "Miss China" pageant, reign over the exhibits from a raised palace room. Products are arranged to show how the Chinese dress (fabrics to fashion styles), what they consume (Chinese cuisine, canned food, table wines and tobacco), how they live (building materials to low-cost housing projects), and how they travel (sedan, motorcycle and bicycle). all objects shown are, of course, made in Taiwan, which enjoyed Asia's highest growth rate in the last decade. A link to the past is provided by marble-framed panels flanking the "phoenix" screen, showing China's earliest contributions to the world -- magnetic compass, paper, printing and silk.
Second floor: Genuine Chinese cuisine served in palatial surroundings. The terrace provides a matchless view of the heart area of the Fair grounds.
Third floor: Archeological and artistic treasures. Oldest piece of sculpture at the Fair is the Shang Dynasty (1766-1111 B.C.) marble kneeling monster. Hundreds of other priceless bronze and jade, lacquer and painting, tapestry and frescoes.
Services
Postcards and Chinese Stamps: Information desk, main hall.
Handicrafts and Souvenirs: Rear of stairways, main hall.
Restaurant and Bar: Terrace and second floor.
